Japan eyes first Sumo tournament in South Korea

The association has so far held Sumo events in 10 countries since the first
overseas tour was in the former Soviet Union in 1965. It will be the first
tour in Asia since its visit to China in 1973.

Not quite true, actually. There was a jungyo tour to Hong Kong in
February 1993, but maybe that doesn't count as Asian since it was
British back then? ;-) Akebono won the two-day tournament, beating
Takanohana in the overall final.

It counts as Asian, but a jungyo (commercial enterprise) is not the same as a koen (government-sponsored).
