Altogether, Terao faced 10 yokozunas during his career. The win against Takanosato and one of the Hokutoumi victories were by fusensho. He defeated Chiyonofuji at the Hatsu '89 basho to avoid a 17-match sweep. It was mentioned how Takatoriki was a nemesis to Akebono, but what about Terao to Onokuni? (In all their matches, Terao went 6-12 against Onokuni.)

Terao recorded 7 kinboshis during his career, 2 against Onokuni and Hokutoumi and 1 each against Chiyonofuji, Takanohana and Musashimaru.

Terao and his family are part of a Kagoshima prefecture/Izutsu-beya connection going back more than 100 years. It originated with the original Sakahoko (Yojiro), who joined the heya in 1893 and reached sekiwake. Two yokozunas from the early part of the 20th century who belonged to the heya came from Kagoshima - Nishinoumi and Genjiyama (Genjiyama's shikona was changed to Nishinoumi after his promotion). They were the 25th and 30th yokozunas. Tsurugamine, Terao's father, joined the heya in 1947 and reached sekiwake. Then in the late 70's, he would recruit Kirishima, Jingaku and Sasshunada (all from Kagoshima) to the heya to join his sons Sakahoko and Terao. All five would become makunouchi regulars in the late 80's.

Terao is probably most noted for his 93 bashos in the makunouchi division, ranking 2nd behind the 97 of Takamiyama. Terao fought in 11 bashos up to his 24th birthday compared to 3 at the same age for Takamiyama, and would retain that 8-basho advantage through his 37th birthday. However, after that he only fought in 2 makunouchi tournaments compared to 14 for Takamiyama.

Terao reached his peak from mid-1989 to mid-1991. He was ranked in sanyaku for 8 consecutive bashos (Aki '89 to Kyushu '90), and altogether he held sekiwake rank 7 times and komusubi 6 times. His last basho in makunouchi was at Natsu 2001.
