Perhaps somewhat related to all this, someone asked
about Towanoyama in Sumo Q&A section of Ozumo magazine
this month.

Towanoyama who fell to Makushita last basho (he had
one win and 6 losses as Makushita East 1) had never
had even one bout in Makuuchi (not counting a Fusenpai
on Day 1) after he was promoted to Makuuchi at the
March basho.

Since 1900, he is the only fourth rikishi so far to
never had a Makuuchi bout after being promoted.

1. Midorigawa Kenkichi, Takasago Beya (Makuuchi debut
at the May Basho in 1900) had 0 win and 0 loss and 10
kyujo (apparently his 10th was for Senshuraku, which
did not have Makuuchi rikishis competing anyway).

2. Nishikinada Keisuke, izutsu Beya (Makuuchi debut at
the January Basho in 1919) had 0 win and 0 loss and 20
kyujo. He missed the basho and following basho due to
typhoid fever.

3. Kenrokuzan Tetsutaro, Tatsunami Beya (Makuuchi
debut at the May Basho in 1926). He had 0 win and 0
loss and 11 kyujo. He became ill just prior to the
basho.

Of course Towanoyama still can avoid the permanent
inclusion in this list if he can get back again to
Makuuchi and face an opponent.
