Re: Kyokai News- July 14, 2002
My idea of challenging and solving the dilemma of scouting more
foreigners to sumo community is to establish an adopting program
utilizing the group of fans sponsoring each sumo-beya. Each
adopting family would provide a shelter to the foreign-born
rikishi for occasional visit, and provide an address for them
to have "shusshin-chi" in Japan.
The family would be an ideal tutor to teach them Japanese
language and customs as well. The neighbors and friends of the
family would be happy to support their effort and possibly
become supporters of the heya as well as sumo and come to
Hon-basho.
Foreign born rikishi would be more Japanized and that would
please Sumo Kyokai. At the same time, Sumo Kyokai would get
more support from both inside and outside of Japan.
