LOS ANGELES, Jul 3, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Tall, short, heavy, lithe, and muscular, male and female sumo wrestlers from 100 to 500-plus pounds, will smash together August 25, 2002 at UCLA's John Wooden Center in the second annual U.S. Sumo Open, the biggest in North America. Opening ceremonies and sumo clinic, free to the public, will be held August 24. August 25, 60 heavy, middle, and lightweight contenders, including amateur world sumo champions from 20 countries, will compete in over 100 matches in the three divisions against the world's best amateur sumo champions. Tournament winners receive the U.S. Open title and prize money. Many in the middle and lightweight divisions are svelte men and women who belie the massive, stereotypical sumo wrestler.
