Or perhaps, it is a grunting contest.  Each rikishi grunts 20 times, loadest
grunt wins. ;-)

But seriously now, looking at the Japanese side of the website, the exercise
is listed as 放し手。  The first kanji is hanatsu meaning "set something
free" or "release",  The last kanji is te meaning hand.  So the implied
meaning is one of "free-hand".  I think this is what inspired ShiroiKuma to
write about squats but with the hand free instead of pressing against the
thigh/hips.
