Jonokuchi question [Adopt-a-rikishi connected]

Once, long ago, I adopted a young Sadogatake rikishi. Unfortunately, he
fell of the banzuke, and didn't return. So last basho I picked another,
Kotokaneko (Chiba-ken), who had his hatsu-dohyo and was ranked Jk49e.
He had a not-so-good 2-5 record in his first basho, so I was worried about
loosing him, too, only to find that he's actually ranked HIGHER on Nagoya
banzuke, being now Jk34w. I thought it only happened in Bench sumo...

Anyway, zhe question is: did so many rikishi retire that 2-5 record had to
be promoted, and by 14 and a half places, no less?

And since I'm asking... any idea what happened to my first adoptee,
Kotoshimogama? I couldn't find him among the retired, nor shikona-changes...
so I'm not giving up on him yet. He's from Hyogo-ken, born on Dec 18th
1981, hatsu dohyo sometime before natsu 2000 (when I adopted him, and when he
was ranked Jk15e), fell off banzuke after two konsecutive kyujo basho (Kyushu
2001 and Hatsu 2002). I presume he was either ill or badly injured.

Thank you!
