Futabayama Takes Sumo Championship

New ^ÑYokozuna^Ò Haguroyama Eliminated; Nayoro Loses Title

Futabayama, "yokozuna" from the Tatsunami Club, won the 11th All-Nippon sumo
championship tourney by defeating Nayoroiwa, "sekiwake" and the defending
champion from the same club, in a three-match challenge round of the tourney
held on Monday, June 2, at the Kokugikan at Ryogoku, Tokyo. This was the
fourth victory for Futabayama.
By repulsing the powerful challenge from Haguroyama, new "yokozuna", and the
champion of the summer main tourney, in an all-Tatsunami Club finals,
Futabayama took the Class A title, thus winning the right to challenge
Nayoroiwa, the winner of 1940 tourney.
In the semi-final bouts for Class A, Haguroyama defeated Kuganishiki while
Futabayama beat Shintozan.

Classes B, C, Titles
Onomori and Tsurugaumi carried away the honors in Class B and in Class C,
respectively, by beating their respective opponents. Onomori won from
Tsurugaumi, the winner of Class C and the qualifier for Class B, while
Tsurugaumi toppled Mineyama.
The closing ceremony immediately followed the Futabayama-Nayoroiwa bout, the
championship arm-band being awarded to Futabayama by Managing Director
Matasaburo Nanami of the Osaka Mainichi and the Tokyo Nichi Nichi. The
H.I.H. Prince Kaya Cup was also presented to Futabayama by Secretary
Kosaburo Komma of Prince Kaya^Òs Household.
The ceremony as well as the tourney closed at 6.30 p.m.
The tourney was participated in by leading grapplers on the roster of the
