Oh, how I agree! When the 3rd Dewanohana got a maemitsu (hand on the front
of the belt) grip with his right hand, there were very few men who could
avoid a yorikiri.

Many thanks for this list. I have been so busy today that I have had no
time to check it against my own list which has men from all universities
listed chronologically.

This is news to me! How fascinating! Am I right in assuming that he never
made it to sekitori rank, since he is not listed otherwise? I had been told
that Dewanohana 3 was the first Nichidai man to go to a heya not in the
Hanakago group (which creamed off the best because that early Hanakago
oyakata was training the Nichidai Sumo Club). Can you enlighten me (on list
or privately) on how you know about this connection?

In the case of the most recent Dewanohana, he joined Dewanoumi-beya because
his uncle, the 2nd Dewanohana, had already been there; he got up to
maegashira 13. If my information is correct, the first man to bear the name
of Dewanohana later became Dewanoumi oyakata (last but two) and later
Musashigawa oyakata. A strong link is also possession of the Dekiyama
myoseki; the 33rd yokozuna held it; so did Dewanohana 2, and now his nephew
has it too. In between times there was a very charming old man, now dead,
and I don't recall his shikona offhand. I have often met the present
Dekiyama's uncle, Dewanohana 2, at heya and koenkai parties.
