Re: Osaka Open Final Day Results
Was lucky enough to be at the Osaka Jungyou yesterday to see Asashoryu take
it all the way to Takanohana. Even in the final it could have gone either
way and was great fun to cheer for him using his Mongolian name- Dorj
(Katrina or Sue may be able to correct me on the spelling). Admittedly he
was very lucky to win in the semi-final going down a split second after
Wakanosato stepped out. There was no mono-ii and slow-mo on my VCR backs up
that the decision in favour of Asashoryu was a good one. I didn't know at
the time, but in the final Asashoryu even caused a bit of claret to be spilt
from the lips of the great Yokozuna Takanohana. Big favourites, judging
from the amount of applause, were Toki, Terao and Kaio. Although the full
house "man in onrei" flags were out, there were definitely several empty
seats, probably surplus that the scalpers who greet you on exiting the train
station couldn't sell.
The whole results for makunouchi follow. They are from my handwritten
scrawlings on the torikumi, with win/loss only (sorry wasn't diligent enough
to jot down kimarite).

After an exciting day of Sumo it was then great to watch the sun go down
amongst the cherry blossoms and the elegantly lit Osaka Castle (although due
to the relatively recent re-building of the castle the line "It's only a
model" from Monty Python's Holy Grail always seems to come to mind ;-) ).
