University Sumo
At the 79th East All Japan University Sumo
Championship held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan on June 4,
Nittai-Dai (Nihon Physical Education University)
defeated the perennial favorite Nichi-Dai (Nihon
University) to earn their first Yusho in Group
category. The Nichi-Dai Sumo Club was the
overwhelming favorite to win their 17th straight Group
Yusho at the Championship but their ace, Narita, lost
the deciding match to the Nittai-Dai's rookie Isomura.
"No doubt we were physically the strongest out there
but to win the Yusho there are other factors," said
dejected Nichi-Dai Coach Tanaka.
At the Individual category, Ogino, a third year
student from Toh-Noh Dai (Tokyo Agricultural
University), defeated another third-year Toh-Noh Dai
student, Tomita, by "oshi-taoshi" to win his first
yusho.
Over at the 74th West All Japan University Sumo
Championship held in Osaka, Noda of Do-Dai (Doshisha
University) won his first Yusho in the Individual
category while the two powerhouses, Doshihsa and
Kinki, placed the first and second respectively in the
Group category.

with the Kyokai now, for example - Kotomitsuki,
Mainoumi, Kushimaumi etc from Nichi-Dai, Tokitsukaze
oyakata, Tokitsumi from Toh-Noh Dai, Tosanoumi from
