RE: Want to know about getting training in Japan for sumo wrestling:
Heheh, don't think I'm an expert... :)
But in fact, I've just returned from a one week training practice at Nihon
University (Nichi-dai) Sumo Club. Also went for practice to Musashigawa-beya
this time.
Khan Quaisar really placed 3rd at the 4th Asian Sumo Championships 1999 in
Osaka in the open category. So he is for real, I'd think, right? :)
Therefore I'm kinda surprised that he wouldn't know how to get training in
Japan.
Anyhow, Khan, I recommend contacting Mr. Muhammad Nisar, who's the General
Secretary of the Pakistan Sumo Federation, his contact numbers are at
http://AmateurSumo.com/members/asia/pakistan.htm and I'm sure he can contact
the International Sumo Federation to try to work out a possibility of your
training in Japan.
But don't think of it as the miracle fix. In fact most everything you can do
at home, it's the same as in Japan, i.e. practice shiko, matawari,
suri-ashi, etc. You don't need to go anywhere for that. The only real thing
that I see in training in Japan is the qualified opposition, that's why I
try hard to get as much training there. I.e. it's hard for me to find good
opposition at home here in the Czech Republic, but in Japan it's the other
way round, so that's why it's good. Funny though, sometimes you end up with
some stupid little injury, that means not much practice in Japan. Just the
kind of luck, right?... :)
Anyhow, I'd think you can do real tough keiko at home too, unless you're
specifically looking for moshiai, i.e. match practice, that is incomparable.
Otherwise, the principles of sumo training are really very easy to grasp and
to do on your own.
