J.A. Sargeant's "Sumo:  the Sport and the Tradition" is indeed a very
comprehensive, basic book.  It is available in the Hawaii State Library
System--in fact I have it checked out right now!

 According to the jacket blurb, the author was/is Sports Editor for the
Asahi Evening News and does a "Brush Up Your English" column for the same
paper.  As of 1959, "he is presently lecturer in English at Tokyo
University."
