I think his good looks also contribute to his popularity.  It's not a
zero-sum game, where Terao can be popular for one and only one reason.
The point of my observation concerning slapping is that Terao slaps
more than anyone else, but you never hear negative comments about
Terao's
sportsmanship.  I made this observation in response to another post that
seemed to be criticizing Takatoriki for slapping. 

I don't think henka or slapping or anything else within the rules of
sumo is unsportsmanlike.  Every rikishi plays to his strengths.  Smaller
rikishi need to use different techniques to be competitive.
